Alvin “Sonny” C. Woolford, 84 of Temperance, MI, died Tuesday. December 13, 2016, in Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo. Born March 1, 1932, in Petersburg, MI, he was the son of John and Leona (LaVoy) Woolford. He was a 1950 graduate from Summerfield High School, then signed with New York Giants as a pitcher. Al then served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War. He married Elizabeth “Bette” Bickford on July 14, 1956. She preceded him in death on November 20, 1998. He was employed by Prudential Life Insurance as an agent for 12 years, Monroe County Drain Commission, sold real estate and then in his retirement years, was care taker for Ivor J. Lindsay Housing in Temperance, MI. Al enjoyed painting in oils and acrylics, golf, Detroit Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, listen to and dance to big band music, but most of all spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving children, Colleen (Joseph) Brescol, Kathleen Abbo-Lamson, Eileen Woolford-Ballard, Laureen Hoffman, Matthew (Laura) Woolford and Michael (Dawn) Woolford; twin sister, and womb-mate, Alvina “Sissy” (Allyn) Wohlgamuth; brother, Filip Woolford; 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Al was preceded in death by his 2 brothers, and grandson, Brandon Ballard.
Visitation will be from 3-8 pm Friday, December 16, 2016, at the Michael W. Pawlak Funeral Home, 1640 Smith Rd., Temperance, MI. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 am, Saturday, December 17, 2016, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, 8330 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI, where he will lie in state after 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Humane Society of Monroe County (In memory of beloved past and present pets of my children.)
